Regulations for Bowfishing in Florida

To engage in bowfishing legally and responsibly, it’s essential for participants to be aware of Florida’s bowfishing regulations. Bowfishers must hold a valid freshwater fishing license when pursuing freshwater species and a saltwater fishing license for saltwater species, unless exempt from license requirements. The species targeted should be non-protected and non-threatened, with specific legal species subject to change.

Bowfishers are encouraged to target noxious and invasive species to help mitigate their impact on local ecosystems. Additionally, certain areas, such as springs and sanctuaries, may have restrictions on bowfishing, and equipment should meet Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) standards.

FAQs

Saltwater fish that you can bowfish in Florida include a variety of species, such as sheepshead, black drum, southern stingray, cownose ray, flounder, jack crevalle, cobia, mullet, mangrove snapper, among others.

Due to the lethality of the bow, when bofishing, catch and release is not possible.

The optimal draw weight for bowfishing typically falls within the 30-40 pounds range. Nonetheless, a slightly higher or lower draw weight can also be effective for catching fish. Youth bows can often be adapted to bowfishing bows, catering to younger shooters who may find a 40-pound draw weight challenging to handle.

Bowfishing can be successful during the day or night. Many people prefer night when the fish are usually more active, visible, and provide close up opportunities.
