When is Duck Hunting Season in Florida

The duck hunting season in Florida for the year 2023-2024 is divided into several phases. The early season is designated for teal and wood duck hunting, which takes place from September 16 to September 20. Following that, there’s an additional period for teal hunting only, from September 21 to September 24. The regular duck hunting season begins on November 18 and continues through November 26, then picks up again from December 9 to January 28.

  • Native to Florida, these ducks are highly prized as game birds and are integral to the prairie ecosystem of South Florida. It is estimated that there are between 30,000-40,000 of these ducks in Florida alone.

Wood Ducks

Small to medium-sized with a crested head. While males are brightly colored, females are brownish-gray, and both genders have a white patch around their eyes and throat​. Wood ducks live in Florida year-round and they inhabit wooded, brushy, or other wetland areas in state.

Fulvous Whistling-Ducks

  • They prefer shallow wetlands and flooded agricultural fields such as rice paddies​. There’s estimated to be over 20,000 Fulvous Whistling-ducks in Florida, with most being right on the shore here at Lake Okeechobee.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks

  • Known for their loud and sociable nature, they are often heard before being seen​.

Mallards:

  • Commonly found throughout Florida, Mallards are non-migratory and easily recognizable by their vibrant green heads, yellow bills, and brownish bodies. They are known for their adaptability and can inhabit a variety of environments​.
