Tthere are several distinct varieties of wild cats, and they exist in a variety of unique habitats in South Florida. Among the many wild creatures that call Florida home, is the bobcat. From the deepest swamps to suburban backyards, you can find the wild bobcats throughout the state. And although bobcats are native to the Florida region, they are rarely seen in some more central locations. This is due to deforestation, which is why the bocat population is anticipated to decrease over the next few years.
Bobcats look very similar to Canadian lynx. They have unique spot patterns that allow individuals to be identified. They are medium-sized cats that are a bit smaller than the lynx. They are pretty similar in dimension and visual appeal to panthers as well. You can immediately identify one by its short tail. The fringes of fur which form the sides of its head are another physical attribute which you can notice easily. It’s full of spots of white fur on its entire body. These may range in color from grey to reddish-brown.
An adult bobcat can develop up to 50 inches in length and on an average can stand 21 inches tall. Usually a Florida bobcat weighs between 13 to 30 pounds. An adult bobcat can weigh 35 pounds that is why it is often mistaken for a young Florida panther. But bobcat is usually more common and much smaller in size than the panther. Panthers in Florida are rarely sighted in the wild.
Bobcats generally live in dens. They are extremely territorial about their dens and frequently mark their dens. Animals like bobcat are especially sensitive to fragmentation due to their large home ranges. They tend to stay within one to two miles of their home. They can live in close proximity to humans, but do not make good pets. Wild bobcats do most of their hunting in low-light problems. Because a lot of the animals bobcats eat are small, bobcats hunt a great number of animals as a way to be satisfied. As there are not any known predators of this terrific cat, it’s safe to say that humans are the bobcat’s biggest threat.
